Ministry Disputes IOM Migration Figures, Highlights High Return Rates

The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation has rejected the latest report by the International Organization of Migration (IOM), saying that since the Islamic Emirate regained control, 3.7 million people have returned to the country.

According to a statement by the ministry, after the return to power, the rate of return of refugees to Afghanistan has been higher than the rate of citizens migrating to other countries.

Abdul Mutalib Haqqani, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, said: "We reject this report. Since the Russian occupation, which saw high levels of migration, there has not been migration to that extent. Currently, the rate of return is much higher compared to migration."

Several human rights activists attribute poverty and unemployment as the main causes of citizens migrating to other countries.

Ali Reza Karimi, a migration activist, said: "The migration of Afghans to other countries is often a result of critical situations such as war and violence, economic crises, and political problems in Afghanistan. Many of these individuals migrate to find security, improve economic conditions, and access a higher quality of life."

At the same time, a number of citizens in the capital are calling on the Islamic Emirate to create job opportunities to prevent citizens from migrating to other countries.

Naveedullah, a resident of Kabul, describing the reasons for migration, told TOLOnews: "Everyone is leaving out of necessity because there is no work here and there are many problems."

Previously, the IOM had reported that eight million Afghans have migrated since 2020.
