Over 28,000 Children Face Malnutrition Crisis

With the end of World Breastfeeding Week, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said that out of 28,228 children suffering from malnutrition in the past seven months, more than 10,000 of them were under the age of six months.

Mohammad Amin Amin, a representative of UNICEF, said: "28,228 children have been admitted, among them 10,240 are children under six months of age, accounting for 36% of this statistic."

At the same time, a representative of the World Food Program (WFP) said that if breastfeeding support is not provided, Afghanistan's economy will suffer an annual loss of $170 million.

Mona Sheikh, a representative of the World Food Programm WFP, said: "If breastfeeding is not supported, it will cost Afghanistan close to 170 million dollars, equivalent to 2.88% of the national income."

Moreover, officials from the Ministry of Public Health emphasize the importance of breastfeeding and call on businessmen and the private sector to cooperate with them in this regard.

Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, the spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, said: "We ask all traders, industrialists, private health sectors, and audiovisual media to fulfill their responsibility in promoting breastfeeding and to cooperate with the Ministry of Public Health."

Abdul Wali Haqqani, Deputy Minister of Public Health said: "Today, we have gathered here with the aim of discussing how to control companies that promote powdered and commercial milk."

According to the statistics provided by UNICEF, a study conducted in 2022 on 66% of births in the country's hospitals shows that 20% of children are not breastfed in the first hours after their birth.
