Ministry: Last Year 1.8M Afghan Refugees Returned to Country

The Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation said that in the past solar year, more than 1.879 million Afghan refugees have returned to the country from Iran, Pakistan, and other countries. 

Officials from the ministry, during the presentation of their annual report, stated that currently, seven million Afghan refugees reside in foreign countries, and there are also three million internally displaced people within the country.

Mahmoodulhaq Ahadi, the head of planning and policy at the Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation, added that during this period, 788,822 internally displaced and returning families have received cash and non-cash assistance.

He added: "Over the past year, more than 1.870 million Afghan refugees have returned to their country from Iran, Pakistan, and many other countries. It is noteworthy that currently, we have 7 million refugees in foreign countries and 3 million internally displaced people in the country."

According to the officials of the ministry, more than 9,700 Afghan refugees who were imprisoned last year in Pakistan, Turkey, and Iran have been released from the prisons of these countries and have returned to the country.

They said that over 15,000 Afghan refugees are imprisoned in Pakistan, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, and efforts for their release are ongoing.

Abdul Rahman Rashid, the technical deputy of the Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation, said: "The Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation has discussed the problems of refugees with the representatives of host countries and other officials who are in Kabul, and we hope that they will not face these problems in the future."

Abdul Mutalib Haqqani, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation, said: "Currently, we have 7,500 imprisoned refugees in Pakistan, and 4,000 Afghan refugees are imprisoned in Iran. Over the past year, 4,000 refugees who were imprisoned in Iran were released and transferred to their country."

Officials of this ministry said that there are 46 refugee townships in 29 provinces of the country, and 13 residential townships have been cleared for their permanent settlement.

They added that to resolve the challenges faced by refugees, cooperation agreements have been signed with 93 partner organizations, 7 agencies, and 14 educational institutions.

Mahmoodulhaq Ahadi said: "In the refugee townships, with the cooperation of partner institutions, 11 schools, 6 clinics, 6 greenhouses or home gardens, water networks, canals, water wells, and other basic services have been provided in different provinces of the country."

According to the information provided by the Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation, strengthening the process of voluntary repatriation, creating orderly migrations, enhancing the role of refugees in the country’s economy, capacity building, and creating job opportunities to strengthen administration, management, and basic services in refugee townships, and resolving challenges are among the future plans of this ministry.
