The Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has arrested six individuals on charges of witchcraft over the past three months.
According to this ministry, with these recent arrests, the total number of people detained on witchcraft charges in the country has reached 200.
Saif-ul-Islam Khyber, the ministry’s spokesperson, said, "In the past three years, 200 people have been arrested, and in the last three months, six more have been added to this number from southern and northern areas of the country."
Some residents of the capital have welcomed the arrest of individuals accused of witchcraft, stating that such practices cause various problems within families.
Nader Rohani, a Kabul resident, said, "Gathering and punishing those who practice witchcraft and fortune-telling is very good, as these practices are also forbidden in Islam."
Hassan, another resident of Kabul, added, "Our request is that all practitioners of witchcraft be fully gathered and brought to justice."
Meanwhile, some religious scholars suggest raising awareness about the harm of visiting sorcerers through mosque sermons.
Religious scholar Hasibullah Hanafi said, "There should be opposition to this practice in mosque sermons and media, informing people not to go to these individuals who bring harm to society."
Before the Ministry’s directive on detaining those accused of witchcraft, such practices had been conducted openly in the capital and provinces for years.
