Officials from the Supreme Court of the Islamic Emirate have reported the implementation of over 80 ta’zir punishments in 14 provinces of the country during the past month.
Abdul Rahim Rashid, spokesperson for the Supreme Court, told TOLOnews that these sentences were carried out on convicted individuals in provinces such as Nangarhar, Takhar, Maidan Wardak, Kabul, Parwan, Jawzjan, Ghazni, and several others.
The spokesperson for the Supreme Court stated: "Based on the rulings of the courts of the Islamic Emirate, ta’zir punishments were given to 81 offenders in the provinces of Nangarhar, Takhar, Maidan Wardak, Kabul, Parwan, Jawzjan, Ghazni, Faryab, Paktika, Baghlan, Khost, Samangan, Ghor, and Balkh."
At the same time, a number of religious scholars view the implementation of divine rulings and ta’zir punishments as essential for eradicating vices from society.
"The enforcement of hudud and ta’zir punishments is necessary in an Islamic system. When a society adheres to laws, hudud, and ta’zir punishments, naturally, corruption, sedition, murder, kidnapping, and immoral acts committed by people will be prevented," Haseebullah Hanafi, a religious scholar, told TOLOnews.
"Afghanistan is an Islamic country. Ta’zir has a Sharia and legal basis. If executed appropriately and with proper documentation, it benefits society. However, if, God forbid, personal preferences replace the rulings, it would not serve the people or the system," said Sayed Muqaddam Amin, a legal expert.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had announced that it would not succumb to any pressure from the international community regarding the enforcement of Sharia rulings. It also urged the world to refrain from negative propaganda regarding the implementation of Sharia laws in Afghanistan.
