December 4 marks the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Tetsu Nakamura. Nakamura was killed five years ago in an attack by unknown armed individuals in the center of Jalalabad city.
The construction of the Murwarid Canal, which originates from the Kunar River and stretches 24 kilometers, was led by Dr. Tetsu Nakamura, known as "Kaka Murad," an Afghan of Japanese descent.
Residents of Kuz Kunar district in Nangarhar province said that with the construction of the Murwarid Canal, droughts have been eradicated, and rain-fed lands have been converted into irrigated lands.
Now, Nangarhar residents are calling on the caretaker government to continue Kaka Murad's projects.
"Nakamura built a canal for us, which turned many barren lands into fertile ones. People have turned the deserts into orchards," Saleem Khan, a farmer in Nangarhar, told TOLOnews.
"He built schools, parks, and canals. Many lands are irrigated from these canals. Previously, there was no water, but now crops are harvested from these lands," said Shahid Khan, another resident of Nangarhar.
"We call on the Islamic Emirate and the Japanese government to follow up on Nakamura's projects and restart their implementation," said Lal Mohammad, another resident.
Meanwhile, Nangarhar local officials pledged to facilitate the implementation of public projects by domestic and foreign institutions.
Quraishi Badlon, head of the I
information and culture department of Nangarhar, said: "We appreciate and support Dr. Nakamura's services. We seriously urge the Japanese government to complete Nakamura's unfinished projects and assist those who provide similar services in Afghanistan."
Tetsu Nakamura was assassinated five years ago on December 4, corresponding to the 13th of Qaws, by unidentified gunmen in Jalalabad.
Although no progress was made in pursuing the case of Tetsu Nakamura's murder or arresting his killers during the previous government, the Japanese government continued the projects implemented by him.
