The President of the United States has spoken with the families of three Americans who were detained by the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan in 2022.
According to a report by Reuters, Joe Biden emphasized his commitment to bringing these detainees back home.
"The release of Afghan detainees in Guantanamo in exchange for the Americans is a positive step and could have a beneficial impact on relations between Afghans and the US,” said Gul Mohammaddin Mohammadi, a political analyst.
Previously, The Telegraph reported that Afghanistan’s caretaker government had postponed the prisoner exchange agreement with the US until the formation of a new government in the country.
Earlier, Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, also confirmed that discussions regarding prisoner exchanges with the US were ongoing, but no results had been achieved yet.
"The Taliban might be waiting for Trump to return and hand over these detainees to him, aiming to strengthen their ties with Trump,” said Wahed Faqiri, an international relations analyst.
Najib Rahman Shamal, another international relations analyst, added: "This prisoner exchange could play a role in expanding US relations with the current rulers of Afghanistan. In essence, it could be seen as a signal for improving relations."
The family members of Ryan Corbett, an American citizen detained in Afghanistan, have also stated that they are trying to meet Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, in Florida to seek his assistance in securing Corbett’s release.
According to the Reuters report, the Biden administration has been negotiating with Afghanistan's caretaker government since July, aiming to implement a plan to free the three American detainees Ryan Corbett, George Glezmann, and Mahmood Habibi—in exchange for an Afghan detainee held at Guantanamo, identified as Mohammad Rahim Afghani.
