Iran: Water Rights Continual Priority in Relations With Afghanistan

Ismail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the remarks made by Iran’s ambassador in Kabul regarding water rights as a "misinterpretation" and stressed that the issue remains one of Iran’s top priorities in its engagement with Afghanistan.

In his press conference, Baghaei emphasized that the ambassador’s remarks were not accurate.

"This is a permanent issue on the agenda of any interaction and dialogue with Afghanistan, and the technical reports you mentioned will certainly be considered by our colleagues in pursuing the matter," he said.

Previously,, the acting ambassador of Iran in Kabul, had stated that the issue of water rights was resolved during recent meetings between Iran’s Foreign Minister and officials of the Islamic Emirate.

Mohammad Aslam Danishmal, a political analyst, said regarding Iran’s water rights: "Our agreement with Iran on water rights exists within the United Nations framework, and Iran must review what is written in this agreement before demanding its water rights based on it."

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the filling of the Pashdan Dam in Herat and the restriction of water flow into Iran.

In response, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, the former political deputy of the Prime Minister’s Office, had stated that agreements on water rights exist between the two countries, but irresponsible statements from Iranian officials could negatively affect bilateral relations.
