OIC Emphasizes Sustainable Engagement with Current Afghan Authorities

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Turkey have emphasized the importance of sustainable engagement and continued constructive dialogue with the current authorities in Afghanistan to support the Afghan people.

According to an OIC statement, these discussions took place between the organization's special envoy for Afghanistan, Tariq Ali Bakheet and Jihad Erginay, the head of the South Asia Department at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two sides discussed Afghanistan’s political, economic, and humanitarian situation.

The statement further reads: "Both sides shared viewpoints on areas of mutual significance including political, economic and humanitarian aspects of Afghanistan and discussed possible avenues of cooperation. The meeting underscored the importance of sustained engagement to support the Afghan people and pursue constructive dialogue with the de facto authorities on various issues."

Turkey is one of the countries that has kept its embassy active in Afghanistan since the return of the Islamic Emirate to power and has maintained diplomatic relations.

Zakir Jalali, director of the second political department of the foreign ministry of the Islamic Emirate, also discussed the establishment of a commission to follow up on bilateral issues with Turkish Foreign Ministry officials during his visit to Turkey.

"OIC member countries and Turkey can engage in dialogue with Afghan authorities and resolve the country's issues in light of Islamic principles,”said Aziz Maaraj, a political analyst.

"Since the OIC represents the Islamic community and the world, maintaining good and continuous relations, as well as holding Islamic conferences like those in Turkey, is crucial for improving the situation and saving the Afghan people,” said Zalmay Afghanyar, a political analyst.

Previously, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said political consultations between Afghanistan and Turkey are important and stated that Ankara seeks to expand its relations with Afghanistan in multiple sectors.
