‘Afghan Forces Fighting Terror On Behalf Of All Humanity’

NATO’s Resolute Support and US Forces Commander in Afghanistan Gen. John Nicholson said the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are not just fighting for Afghanistan but they are also fighting on behalf of all humanity against international terrorism.

He said the United States and its allies are fighting against terrorists for peace, stability and freedom in Afghanistan.

Nicholson assured the public that Washington and its allies are fully behind the Afghan government forces’ fight against terrorists.

“Your National Defense and Security Forces are defending your country and fighting for peace. These brave men and women are the true heroes of your nation who continue to sacrifice and put their lives on the line to protect you, your families and to provide a prosperous and peaceful future for this country,” Nicholson said.

The American general made the remarks in a video recording on the first day of Ramadan where he asked the Taliban to accept President Ashraf Ghani’s peace offer and make a better future for their children.

“In this holy month of Ramadan, we encourage all armed Taliban to accept the offer of his excellency President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and to join peace talks for better future for their children and for noble people of this great nation,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO, said at the end of a military commission meeting of the organization in Brussels that the Afghan forces continue to reduce Taliban abilities.

“… what I would expect to see is a second year where the Afghan forces are successful in leading that fight and decreasing the ability of Taliban to operate throughout their fighting season,” he said.

President Ashraf Ghani in a message on Ramadan called on the Taliban not to create fear and insecurity in the country.

“I hope that Taliban and other opposition groups in Afghanistan will show their respect for the holy religion of Islam and to its teachings and break the respect of the holy month of Ramadan and not create fear and insecurity in this month,” Ghani said.

At least three months have passed from government’s peace offer to the Taliban, but the group has not given a positive response to it so far.
