Afghans Celebrate Eid Amid Ceasefire

Like millions of other Muslims in the world, Afghans also began the Eid-al-Adha celebrations on Friday. But in Afghanistan, it coincides with a three-day ceasefire between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

On Friday morning 14 people were wounded in an explosion in Herat city in western Afghanistan on Thursday night, and no group has claimed responsibility. Besides this blast, there have been no security incidents reported.

Afghans in various regions of the country have welcomed the ceasefire. They called on the warring sides in Afghanistan to agree to a long-term ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the Taliban in the Tangi area of Maidan Wardak joined the local people in the Eid celebration.

“We call on all sides to swiftly start the intra-Afghan talks,” said Habiburraman, a resident in Tangi area of Maidan Wardak.

“The people are very happy, they spent time in a peace, there were no clashes,” said Esmatullah, a resident in Tangi.

“We call on the Taliban to surrender themselves to God and the Holy Quran, stop killing their brothers, they should agree to a ceasefire,” said Abdul Ahad, a resident in Logar.

“We hope that the ceasefire marks the start of permanent ceasefire in the country,” said a resident in Kabul named Mirwais.

Maidan Wardak is along the Kabul-Kandahar highway which is frequently attacked by the Taliban and the site of roadside blasts.
