Afghans Enjoy Calm of Eid Ceasefire, Urge Peace

Residents of Maidan Wardak province, who ordinarily witness fighting, say they have experienced calm during the three days of Eid and they urge the warring parties to continue the ceasefire.

Mohammad Ayoub, a shopkeeper in Maidan Wardak, says that he has seen nothing but war and pain in his life, and that he wishes to spend the rest of his life in peace.

“There was peace on Eid in Maidan Shahr, capital of Maidan Wardak. I hope peace will come and everyone will live in peace. We are tired of war,” said Ayoub.

Many other residents took advantage of this ceasefire opportunity by traveling to Bamyan province, to spend some time without war and security fears.

“Today we came to visit Bamiyan province with friends, we hope there will always be peace and we will always travel in peace,” said Abdul Manan, a resident of Ghazni.

But in some other parts of the province the story is different. Sharifullah, a resident of Nerkh district, now stays in Kabul and wanted to visit his hometown in the district during Eid ceasefire, but according to him the Taliban did not allow him.

“I want to go to Nerkh district--we have been in Kabul for nine years, our homes burned during the fighting. Four members of my family have been killed in the war, now we are really tired of war,” Sharifullah said.

Ghulam Nabi, an army soldier who is on duty during Eid, away from his family in a remote checkpoint in Nerkh district, is counting on real peace coming to the country.

"We (protect) the nation to assure people they are safe and we are standing to defend our nation," said Nabi.

However, government forces in Nerkh district of Maidan Wardak say they witnessed a ceasefire violation in the district during the two days of Eid.

“The first day of Eid was good and the ceasefire was going well, but on the second day of Eid the Taliban attacked, now we wonder what kind of promise it is,” said Tawofiqullah Kohistani, an army soldier in Nerkh district.

This is the third Eid that Afghan citizens have witnessed a ceasefire in Afghanistan.

In the days before Eid, fighting and violence in Afghanistan escalated, and clashes between government forces and the Taliban continued in at least 17 provinces.
