Explosion Kills Three Including Religious Cleric In Laghman

An explosion occurred in Sultan Ghazi Township in Mehtarlam City, the center of Laghman province, on Friday afternoon, local officials said.

Laghman governor’s spokesman Sarhadi Zwak confirmed the incident and said casualties are feared.

Sources said the explosion was as a result of a motorbike bombing and that its target was Mawlawi Yunus Shamakhail, a prominent religious scholar in the province.

The sources said Shamakhail and two of his bodyguards were killed in the blast.

This comes after President Ashraf Ghani announced a unilateral ceasefire with the Taliban on Thursday.

On Monday, more than 2,000 religious scholars gathered in Kabul and issued a fatwa against the ongoing war in the country.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
