Govt Awaits Court Ruling Over Dismissed Ministers

Office of Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive Officer, on Thursday said government will determine the fate of the seven dismissed ministers once the Supreme Court issues its verdict.

Over a month ago, MPs at the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) dismissed seven ministers over their failure to spend at least 70 percent of their development budgets.

Abdullah’s deputy spokesman, Jawed Faisal, said government will act on the ministers once the Supreme Court issues its verdict.

“We expect the Supreme Court to share its view in this respect under the law in order to finally make a decision in this regard,” he stated.

The statement comes a week after a number of lawmakers said that the court had upheld parliament’s move on the ministers.

However, President Ashraf Ghani defied parliament's decision on the ministers and referred the case to the Supreme Court to interpret Article 92 of the Constitution in this respect.

Later Ghani asked the ministers to continue their work until the court issues its verdict.

Commenting on this, political commentator Hamid Azizi said: “The continuation of this situation can affect government, its governance and formation.”

“This case has not been referred to us to talk on it. However, our stance is that we will wait for the Supreme Court’s decision in this respect,” said Mohammad Qasim Hashimzai, chairman of the Independent Commission of Overseeing Implementation of the Constitution.

“Government should respect the MPs’ decision and the Constitution and must send new candidates for the ministries as soon as possible,” Wolesi Jirga Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said.

The parliament members are set to break for winter recess within two weeks. However, sources close to Abdullah quoted the Supreme Court and said the Presidential Palace so far has not made a formal request that the court interprets Article 92 of the Constitution.
