Interior Ministry Destroys Over 30 Drug Factories

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has destroyed more than 30 drug factories and 12 drug caches belonging to the Taliban and drug traffickers in different parts of the country during the past 11 months.

The ministry has also arrested at least 2,000 drug dealers and traffickers including five Pakistani and seven Iranian nationals during this period, the deputy minister of interior for counter-narcotics Abdulkhalil Bakhtiar said.

“The drugs confiscated this year amounts to 231 tons which include different drugs including opium and morphine,” Bakhtiar told reporters on Wednesday.

He said drugs are the main income source for the Taliban.

“Taliban are nourished by the black money they receive this way. This campaign has imposed a $270-million USD loss to mafia and drug dealers,” he added.

“Unfortunately, this year was not a good year. There was war. It (poppy) was cultivated in many parts of Afghanistan including remote areas,” Interior Ministry’s spokesman Najib Danish said.

Some lawmakers meanwhile questioned government’s will in the counternarcotic campaign.

“Drugs are sold in many prisons in Afghanistan, even in Kabul City, in Pul-e-Sokhta and close to the Ministry of Interior,” said Asif Seddiqi, deputy speaker of Meshrano Jirga, Upper House of Parliament.

This comes after the US Air Force has targeted many drug factories belonging to the Taliban during the past four months.
