Kabul Residents Oppose e-NIC Roll Out

A number of residents of Kabul at a gathering on Monday said they are against the issuance of the electronic National Identity Cards (e-NIC).

The residents said the electronic ID cards distribution is illegal and that it should be stopped immediately.

They said the continuation of electronic ID cards distribution means the disintegration of Afghanistan.

“No one’s ethnicity change by becoming president, CEO, minister or MP,” Abdul Hafiz Mansoor, a protester said.

“Any one-sided action being taken by the Presidential Palace is illegitimate. We back the stance of the Chief Executive Officer in this regard,” Ahmad Zaki, another protester said.

Some MPs once again touched on the issue of e-NIC rollout on Monday, saying that electronic ID cards distribution process illegal and it should be stopped.

“(Presidential Palace) should accept the law on population registration that was approved by the parliament. Otherwise, we will stop this illegal process by force,” MP Abdul Latif Pedram said.

President Ashraf Ghani in the meantime urged the people to stay united and do not let discord to be created among them.

“If any citizen think himself as a drop, then the river will not be formed. Our strength is in our people relations with each other,” said Ghani.

Electronic ID cards roll-out was started on last Thursday in the Presidential Palace where president Ghani was the first person who received his ID card.

Hours after, however, Chief Executive Officer of the National Unity Government Abdullah Abdullah appeared in a press conference and announced his oppose to the process.

Electronic ID cards roll-out has started based on president’s legislative decree that includes ethnicity information in the ID cards while a number of citizens of Afghanistan say that they do not want ethnicity information on their cards.
