Key District In Baghlan Reportedly Falls To Taliban

Local officials confirmed that Tala Wa Barfak district in Baghlan province, north of Afghanistan, has been under siege by militants since Tuesday morning.

Tala Wa Barfak district governor Ismail Barfaki told TOLOnews that roads to the district were closed as militants attacked different routes to the center on Tuesday.

He said the fighting is ongoing between government forces and the Taliban.

According to him, three police force members were wounded in the battle.

The district governor said dozens of Taliban fighters have come from Samangan, Kunduz and Baghlan provinces to fight government forces in the area.

He added that reinforcement troops are 20km from other government forces, but their route is blocked to help their comrades.

Meanwhile, a provincial council member from Baghlan said on condition of anonymity that the district has fallen to the Taliban hours after clashes with government forces.

Baghlan police however said clashes still ongoing between government forces and militants in the district, but added that it has not fallen to the Taliban.  

Tala Wa Barfak is deemed a key district in Baghlan which shares a border with Bamiyan and Parwan provinces.

Taliban has claimed that the group has captured the district on Tuesday afternoon.
