Khalilzad Arrives in Kabul: Reuters

US special representative to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, arrived in Kabul on Wednesday to meet Afghan leaders to discuss ways of resuming peace talks, Reuters reported.

This follows US President Donald Trump’s visit last week to celebrate Thanksgiving with US forces at Bagram Airfield and meet with President Ashraf Ghani.

“The US and Afghan presidents agreed on the resumption of peace negotiations but with close participation and coordination with the Afghan government,” a senior Afghan official said, according to a Reuters report.

“Our precondition is a reduction of violence leading to a ceasefire, and that is what the US want too,” the official said.

Trump  suspended the peace talks with the Taliban in September after Taliban claimed a suicide attack in Kabul that killed a US soldier and 11 Afghans.
