Khalilzad On Diplomatic Trail Again For Afghan Peace Effort

The US peace envoy for Afghanistan has begun a trip to Brussels, Paris, and Moscow to discuss the Afghan peace process, the US Department of State said in a statement.

In Brussels and Paris, Khalilzad will meet with “likeminded partners including the EU, NATO, and UN to review how best to support accelerated efforts to reach peace in Afghanistan,” and “In Moscow, Ambassador Khalilzad will meet with Russian and Chinese counterparts to discuss shared interests in seeing the war in Afghanistan come to an end.”

On Monday, Kay Bailey Hutchison, the US Ambassador to NATO, tweeted that the US special envoy for Afghanistan peace had briefed the allies at NATO HQ over the current situation in Afghanistan.

“Detailed coordination and constant dialogue with our allies on Resolute Support mission is essential to ensuring a stable and peaceful Afghanistan,” she said.

NATO’s Secretary General also commented on Khalilzad’s visit.

“Thanks to Amb. Khalilzad for a useful briefing. #NATO & our partners remain committed to supporting Afghanistan & creating the conditions for a peaceful settlement,” NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg tweeted.
