Khalilzad Discusses Peace With Atta Noor

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad on Sunday met with Atta Mohammad Noor, the chief executive of Jamiat-e-Islami party, and discussed issues around peace in the country.

According to reports, Khalilzad told Noor that various parties have become closer to the idea of peace.

He stressed the need for a nationally representative team to be established - which is accepted by all sides – to work for peace.

This comes after Taliban said they will talk only with parties that have influence among the Afghan people.

US ambassador to Afghanistan John R. Bass and Resolute Support commander Gen. Austin Scott Miller also attended the meeting.

This meeting followed Khalilzad’s meeting on Saturday night with President Ashraf Ghani where he briefed him on his schedule over the next week, which will see him visit a number of countries in the region.

Ghani thanked Khalilzad for the work he’s doing to bring about peace and discussed issues around his second trip to the region, a presidential palace statement read.

The statement said it is expected that Khalilzad will return to Kabul to give feedback to Ghani after visiting Pakistan, Qatar and the UAE.

Khalilzad was in the region last month – stopping first in Kabul before visiting four other countries and meeting with the Taliban in Qatar.

Khalilzad also met with First Vice President general Abdul Rashid Dostum in Kabul in which the two sides discussed the country’s ongoing political and security climate with special focus on the parliamentary and presidential elections and peace process.

“First Vice President in the meeting talked about the increasing violence in the country, especially in the north of Afghanistan and said that he can play a vital role towards the peace process and talks with the Taliban,” his office said in a statement.

In the meeting, the two sides stressed the need for fake votes cast in the parliamentary to be separated from credible votes so that public trust is reinstated in the election commissions, according to the statement.
