Leaders Discuss Coronavirus Amid Election Crisis

The Presidential Palace on Tuesday acknowledged that currently the coronavirus is one of the major problems for Afghans, and said that the government is focusing on how to tackle it.

“Coronavirus is the number one concern of the Afghan people. It is a major threat domestically and internationally,” said Waheed Omar, Director General, Office of Public and Strategic Affairs of the President.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Abdullah has also said that currently coronavirus has become the biggest problem for the entire world.

“Today it (coronavirus) has become the biggest headache more than any other crisis in the world,” said Abdullah.

This comes as tensions between Abdullah Abdullah and President Ashraf Ghani continue to remain unresolved.

“We are also addressing those issues,” said Abdullah, referring to the political tensions in the country.

Political commentators meanwhile have suggested that both Ghani and Abdullah to resolve their differences through diplomacy.

“The Afghan politicians should come together and resolve this problem,” said Matiullah Ibrahimzai, a political analyst in Kabul.

“The people of Afghanistan have chosen them (Ghani and Abdullah) as their leaders, so they should protect their reputation and tolerate each other,” said Rais Abdul Khaliq, a member of parliament.

Meanwhile, the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad in an interview with SPIEGEL has said that if the ongoing political crisis in Afghanistan leads to violence, this could have a negative impact on the work of the Afghan security forces and the peace process.
