Mobile Phone Service Blackout Has Kunduz Residents Fuming

Kunduz residents have spoken out about the lack of telecommunication systems in their province at night which has been an ongoing issue for more than a year.

According to them the Taliban consistently threatens telecoms companies in a bid to get them to switch off services overnight.

Residents have said that the Taliban threaten to blow up towers if their orders are not followed.

“Now the armed opponents are ordering the termination of telecom services during the nights, it is now one week that the telecom services are being cut off in Kunduz at night,” said head of Kunduz provincial council Amruddin Wali.

According to residents, threats against telecom services have created major problems for them as they have no phone service at night.

“There should be pressure on telecommunication companies to keep services operational during the night, because there is war going on, people have problems and their problmes should be resolved,” said one resident Hamidullah.

Mobile phone companies have also reported that the Taliban has threatened to destroy towers in the event of them not shutting down services.

“Over the past week telecom services are not working properly in Kunduz which creates a lot of problems, for instance someone if becomes ill we will face a problem,” said local resident Rahmatullah.

But, Kunduz police headquarters were not able to confirm these claims of Taliban involvement but have confirmed that services shut down overnight.

“So far it is not clear why these services are cut during the night; we are trying to gather information to find out whether it is cut because of a technical problem or because of (insurgent) pressure,” said Kunduz police chief Abdul Hamid Hamidi.

The Taliban’s spokesman has however confirmed that telecom services are switched off at night on the orders of Taliban in areas they control.

This is not the first time the Taliban has ordered overnight service outages. In the past, they have done the same thing in a number of districts around the country. They have also repeatedly blown up towers in restive areas.
