Mohmand Asks Wolesi Jirga To Probe His Case

Mohammad Asif Mohmand, a member of Balkh provincial council, on Tuesday called on lawmakers at the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) to investigate his case and ensure justice is served.

Mohmand in turn handed over some documents to members of the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament) and MPs and asked them to investigate why no progress has been made in his case against Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor.

Last month Mohmand was arrested at Balkh international airport by Afghan security forces on charges including forgery of government documents and corruption.

Mohmand’s arrest sparked an outcry by his supporters which led to President Ashraf Ghani ordering a probe into the situation.

Mohmand at the time accused Noor of arresting him and assaulting him. An investigation was carried out by a fact-finding team but no information has been released regarding their findings.

“What is the reason for my case not being handled over the past month; this needs to be clarified to punish those who committed the crime,” said Mohmand.

“Whether he is an ordinary citizen of this country or a minister or a governor, the constitution has defined people’s rights, the legal and judicial institutions are also responsible to serve justice,” said senator Gul Ahmad Azimi.
