MPs React to US Aid Cut Over Afghan Political Impasse

The US's $1 billion aid cut to Afghanistan, due to the continued fighting between Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, evoked strong reactions from members of the Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of the Afghan parliament.

A number of representatives find the continuing disagreement between Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah to be embarrassing and devastating to the country. The selfishness of these politicians, they say, has frightened the people and has now caused $1 billion in US aid to be cut off, which threatens national security.

“This system and the people should not be sacrificed by two doctors (Ghani and Abdullah).” said Khalid Assad, member of parliament.

“This country is in crisis and what are our politicians doing? We don’t want Abdullah nor Ghani, they destroyed the country,” said Hamayoun Shahedzada, another parliament member.

“Sixty people from our National Army were martyred in two days, whether they are children of them (Ghani and Abdullah) or children of the nation,” said Allahgul Mujaheed, another member of parliament.

Some members of the Wolesi Jirga say the US is cutting aid to Afghanistan because of the selfishness of the country's politicians.

“Because of their selfishness, one billion dollars of US economic aid has been canceled,” said Kamal Nasir Osoli, a member of parliament.

“Aid has been cut off, and the chief executive and president are still thinking of power," said Semin Barakzai, a member of parliament.

“A US declaration has reduced financial aid to Afghanistan, which contradicts the strategic partnership agreement and joint US-Afghan agreement,” said Khan Agha Rezaie, another parliament member.

Other parliament members believe that these differences have led the country to global isolation.

“Unfortunately, the stubbornness of our politicians has taken our country to regional and global isolation,” said Mohammad Nasim Mudaber, a member of parliament.

“Americans have reached an agreement with the Taliban and Pakistanis, and their efforts are just for deceiving people,” said Ziauddin Zia, a member of parliament.

The divisions between the country's politicians, especially Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, widened when the Independent Election Commission (IEC) declared Ashraf Ghani the winner of the presidential election, which Abdullah did not accept. Now the Wolesi Jirga has appointed a delegation to deal with these differences.
