New US Policy A Chance For Taliban, Not An Invitation: Abdullah

The Chief Executive of the National Unity Government, Abdullah Abdullah, at a press conference Tuesday said the Afghan government’s message to the Taliban and their supporters is that the new strategy is not an invitation to peace but a chance to strengthen the peace process.

Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s strategy for Afghanistan, Abdullah said: “Our message to our neighbors is that the new US policy is a chance for them (countries in the region) to utilize and benefit from this opportunity.”

Trump announced his strategy on Afghanistan Tuesday where he said the United States should continue fighting in Afghanistan and that they can no longer be silent about Pakistan’s safe havens for terrorist organizations.

He also talked about giving more authority to the troops on the ground. “We will also expand authority for American armed forces to target the terrorists and criminal networks that sow violence and chaos throughout Afghanistan,” the US president said.

In the meantime, Abdullah said “the strategy renewed the commitment of the United States to Afghanistan and to our people”.

“This new chapter opened by the new strategy is a unique opportunity to tackle terrorists and achieve our goals for peace,” he said.

He also said the National Unity Government must strengthen the security and defense forces to protect the people against terrorists.

“The new and strong stance against Daesh provides unique opportunity to destroy this terrorist group and uproot them from here,” Abdullah added.

He thanked US President Trump and called the strategy a timely and comprehensive decision on Afghanistan.
“The National Unity Government is also committed to bringing reforms, fighting against corruption, strengthening of the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces and destroying enemies of the people,” he said.

He stated that the new US strategy will positively impact the situation of Afghan security forces.
