Afghan officials rejected the Pakistan's Army Hilal Newspaper claim saying that Afghanistan was a safe haven for terrorists, counter-arguing that Pakistan's role as a terrorist haven was clear to the whole world.
Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told TOLOnews that with Pakistan's track record of insurgent leaders such as Osama Bin Laden and Haqqani residing there, it was Pakistan who should take responsibility for backing terrorist networks on its soil.
"It's clear not only to Afghan people but to the people of the world where the insurgency exists: where Osama was found, where Al-Qaeda, Haqqani and other Taliban are based, and where they feed and plan insurgent activities within Afghanistan from," Sediqqi told TOLOnews, adding that the newspaper's report was propaganda.
The Hilal Newspaper says that the terrorist groups are using sanctuaries in Afghanistan for many purposes, from training recruits, to holding planning meetings.
"Training camps at which such skills as hand to hand combat and the handling of firearms are taught, require a large area which has been made available to them in Kunar," it said.
"Why have these activities not yet caught the attention of ISAF or the Afghan security forces? The question arises as to why the 'safe havens' are tolerated (or at least not attacked) on the Afghan side of the border?"
Afghan military expert Noorulhaq Olomi said that the international community would not allow Afghanistan to be or become a safe haven for the insurgents because of the strategic agreements it holds with several countries combating insurgency in the region.
"The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has signed strategic agreements with the world to ensure anti-insurgency efforts. They will not allow Afghanistan to provide safe havens and train insurgents within the country," Olomi told TOLOnews.
The Hilal report, however, called on the international community to pay attention to the insurgency camps in Afghanistan and take necessary action.
