Faryab Residents Homeless Due to Road Construction

Residents of Maimana city in Faryab province said because of road construction their homes were destroyed by the municipality.

In addition, they say they have spent days without shelter, they are facing economic challenges, they cannot buy new homes, and the municipality must fulfil its commitment to provide compensation.

“The municipality came and destroyed our house and told us they will pay for damages or give us land, but still now it has not been implemented. I went to Iran for ten years and when I came back I bought that now-ruined place,” said Zarmina, a person affected by the construction.

“We are here without shelter and food, we call on the government to help us here in this field and with our expenses. The price has increased and we are not able to buy food,” said Khadijah, a person affected by the construction.

However, municipality officials said they have undertaken the work in line with regulations, and to provide urban services to residents.

“Some of them were given land and others that were not given land were promised that they will be given as much land as has been destroyed--that much land will be distributed to them,” said Mullah Mohib Ullah Mowafaq.

According to the municipality of Maimana, the road in the city of Maimana is in a strategic location and near the provincial office are located the municipality department, the National Directorate of Security, the Ministry of Public Health, and several schools.
