Recent rains and storms in Nangarhar have taken the lives of seven members of a family who worked at a brick kiln.
The family members said that along with the loss of lives, the storm caused significant financial damage, leaving them worried about their future.
"A wall collapsed, killing seven of my family members and injuring two. Among the martyrs are my son, daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren. The injured were taken to the hospital," said Shah Rahman, a family member of the deceased.
"The roof of the house collapsed due to the storm, and when we arrived, my parents and five sisters were trapped under the debris," said Yaserullah, another family member of the deceased.
"My grandfather and brothers were at work. When we returned, the entire roof had collapsed, burying my siblings. We are now in a state of shock, unable to comprehend the situation. Due to poverty, we can’t even attend school or religious classes," said Tafsirullah, another family member.
Relatives of the family said that due to economic hardships and lack of resources, the family might have to return to their original home. They urge the authorities to assist the bereaved family.
"Because of poverty, they cannot leave these kilns. Even after the funeral, they returned to work to avoid losing their jobs," said Hakim Khan, a relative of the victims.
"When we arrived, we had to pull out each body. The ambulance was waiting, and we loaded the deceased. They all died instantly," said Shafiullah, another relative.
Meanwhile, officials from the Nangarhar Information and Culture department said that government and aid agencies responded promptly, providing immediate assistance to the victims' families.
Quraishi Badloon, the head of the information and public advertisement committee of Torkham camp, said: "Each martyr’s family has been given 100,000 Afghanis, and the injured have received 50,000 Afghanis. Survey teams are currently assessing the total damage and losses, and comprehensive measures will be taken for all affected families."
This incident occurred as severe winds and rains on Monday in Nangarhar claimed 52 lives and injured around 350 others.
