Nangarhar Storms Inflict 2 Billion Afghani in Damages: Officials

As a result of the heavy rain and severe storm last Monday in Nangarhar, approximately two billion Afghanis worth of damage has been inflicted on government departments and the private sector.

Local officials in Nangarhar say that the storm destroyed hundreds of houses, thousands of acres of agricultural land and crops, dozens of electricity pylons, and trees.

They added that they are striving to address the problems of the affected individuals with the assistance of international aid organizations.

Quraishi Badloon, Director of Information at the Nangarhar Directorate of Information and Culture, said, "Electricity pylons have been destroyed; in addition, thousands of acres of agricultural land have been damaged. Dams, canals, and public roads have also suffered damage in all sectors. Unfortunately, I must say that both the public and private sectors in Nangarhar have been affected."

Meanwhile, the victims of the severe storms in Nangarhar are seeking assistance from the government and aid organizations.

Akhtar Gul, one of those affected, said, "These storms and rains have caused severe damage. People's homes have been destroyed, their crops and walls have collapsed. Hundreds of houses have been damaged, and there have been casualties and injuries."

Another affected individual, Dil Agha, said, "We are nine people, and we made our living from this land. These storms and rains took everything away and left us with nothing."

Several other residents of Nangarhar say that the heavy rains and destructive storm, in addition to destroying several public facilities, have also destroyed dozens of electricity pylons, and so far, the electricity problem in Jalalabad city has not been resolved.

Didar Dulatzi, a resident of Nangarhar, said, "It has thrown power lines, pylons, and houses into the valley."

Farhad Khan, another resident of Nangarhar, said: "The power network has been completely destroyed. This needs to be repaired and made usable again."

According to information from the Nangarhar Directorate of Information and Culture, due to the strong wind, heavy rains, and destructive storm in the center and districts of Surkhrod, Behsud, Batikot, and some other areas of this province, 52 people, including women and children, lost their lives, and around 350 others were injured.
