Increasing Carpet Production in Badakhshan Faces Market Challenges

Several carpet weavers in Badakhshan say that carpet production in this province has increased, but the lack of a market for sales remains a serious challenge.

They are calling on officials in the caretaker government to market these products.

However, the Badakhshan Directorate of Industry and Commerce said that the construction of a special women's trade center in Faizabad, the provincial capital, is underway, and nearly 70 women are engaged in carpet weaving there.

The women in this workshop said that carpet production has increased compared to previous years, but the lack of a suitable market for sales and a carpet washing center are serious challenges they face.

Roya, a carpet weaver, said: "There are many challenges in this sector, for example, there is no market or washing facilities for carpets. If these problems are resolved, our products will sell well."

Regarding this, Sohaila, another carpet weaver, added: "We ask the Islamic Emirate to create a market where we can sell our products."

The increase in carpet production in Badakhshan is said to be due to girls who have been deprived of education now turning to carpet weaving.

Abdul Ali Yaftali, the head of the Badakhshan Carpet Weavers' Union, said: "The girls who were school students and were unemployed at home came forward, and carpet weaving has grown significantly."

The Badakhshan Directorate of Industry and Commerce pledged to make efforts to market these women's handicrafts and establish a special women's trade center in the province.

Samaruddin Rahmani, the director of business affairs at the Badakhshan Directorate of Industry and Commerce, said: "The Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Badakhshan is seriously working on this issue to hold exhibitions for carpets and other entrepreneurs' products."

According to statistics from the Badakhshan Directorate of Industry and Commerce, more than a thousand women in 15 districts of this province are currently engaged in business activities, and this trend is increasing.
