A young woman from Herat has established a sewing workshop, providing job opportunities for dozens of girls deprived of education and women without guardians.
In this workshop, girls who have been unable to attend school or university have learned professional tailoring in recent months.
Parwana Sefatyar, the head of the sewing workshop, stated that the garments produced not only sell in domestic markets but are also exported to the United States, Canada, and Germany.
The workshop’s primary goal is to create job opportunities and a safe environment for women.
"I wanted to provide job opportunities for women and create a safe space where they can work with complete security and develop their products,” she said.
Girls deprived of education say that working in this workshop has given them new hope.
"We feel very good that this job opportunity has been created here. Since the schools were closed, I experienced severe depression and stayed at home,” said Hasna Afsarzada, one of the employees.
"I’m very happy that this workplace has been created for us. We can sew and earn an income here, “Fatima Azizi, another employee, added.
Some of the women in the workshop are the breadwinners of their families and express satisfaction with earning an income here.
"There are five of us at home. My husband is sick, and this workshop was a big opportunity for me. It has had a positive impact on my and my family’s life, both mentally and financially,” said Fariba Alkozai, one of the employees.
With schools and universities closed to girls, many have turned to learning skills and professional work.
In the past three years, hundreds of large and small women’s handicraft workshops have become active in Herat, employing thousands of women and girls.
