The Panjshir Special Brigade has announced that the Panjshir–Badakhshan road has reopened to travelers and cargo vehicles after being closed for nearly a month due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.
This road connects several districts of Badakhshan Province—including Yamgan, Kuran wa Munjan—with Panjshir Province.
Naqibullah Farqani, the brigade’s engineering director, said: "This area was hit by strong winds and heavy avalanches, and a lot of snow had piled up. But over the past week, our workers have been continuously clearing the route."
Residents of Badakhshan and Panjshir expressed relief at the improved road conditions compared to previous years.
Sayed Abdullah, a resident of Badakhshan, said: "There are many challenges on this route. Avalanches block the way, and when the snow melts, the water damages parts of the road."
Murtaza, a resident of Panjshir, said: "This is the shortest route between us and Badakhshan. When someone is sick or exhausted, it allows for quicker travel. Previously, we had a patient with appendicitis who had to be taken through Faizabad, but he didn’t survive."
Emanullah, a driver, said: "This route was closed for about a month, but thank God it is now open. Before, even Corollas couldn't pass through, but now I’ve come through myself."
Officials from the Panjshir Special Brigade said they aim to extend the road in the coming months to areas near the hypothetical Durand Line to enhance regional transit connectivity.
