Ministry of Education: Over 6,800 Literacy Classes Established in One Year

The Literacy Department of the Ministry of Education announced that it established 6,819 literacy classes across the country over the past year.

According to officials, more than 122,000 individuals have graduated from these courses, and around 145,000 people have benefited from them.

“We have established 6,819 literacy courses, and 145,305 individuals have benefited from these programs; more than 122,000 of them have graduated,” stated Zahedullah Salimi, head of the National Mobilization of the Literacy Department.

According to plans, this department is set to launch an additional 7,200 classes this year to serve over 180,000 individuals across the country.

Over the past two decades, many citizens, especially in remote areas, have been deprived of access to educational services due to war, poverty, and economic challenges.

These literacy classes are considered a step toward individual and social empowerment for these groups.

“Providing basic literacy education is a positive and commendable step. This initiative should be strengthened, and higher education opportunities should also be made available to people in remote areas,” Zakiullah Mohammadi, a university professor said.

“Awareness, dynamism, and enlightenment in society are dependent on literacy levels. The role of literacy should not be limited to the Ministry of Education alone; other institutions must also participate in this endeavor,” stated Tariq Haqjoo, another university professor.

Earlier, education officials in Kunduz province had also announced that, with the cooperation of aid organizations, 700 local educational classes were launched in the provincial capital and districts to educate over 25,000 boys and girls who had been deprived of schooling.
