Traffic Dept : MPs Abuse License Plates

The Kabul Traffic Department on Sunday said that the majority of MPs use special number plates.

The Traffic Department stated, for its part, that it had issued only five special license plates to the parliament’s administrative board, and not to the majority of lawmakers.

Meanwhile, a lawmaker confessed to using four-digit license plates on two of his vehicles, which is a violation of the law.

“It is not legal when several vehicles use the same plate,” said Raees Abdul Khaliq, a member of parliament.

“They have put on illegal plates, they are making them and I don’t know where they make them,” said Khan Mohammad, the Traffic Department director.

“When there are license plates with similar numbers then opponents exploit it to create chaos,” said Marwa Amini, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Inteior.

In response, a number of Afghan citizens have lashed out at the members of parliament for being involved in the violation of the law.

“They make plates which have specific alphabets and you can easily make it anywhere,” said a resident in Kabul Fareed.

“We voted for them so they would work for the country, but they are thinking about their vehicles and plates,” said a resident in Kabul, Ahmad Gul.

But, Asif Sediqqi, the second deputy of Afghanistan’s senate has said that the parliament had asked the Ministry of Interior (MoI) to resolve the issue, but the ministry did not bother to take action.

“The main responsibility goes to the Ministry of Interior because it has not cooperated when it comes to plates and vehicles,” said Senator Asif Sediqi

This follows an angry standoff on Friday night between police and the security guards of MPs that led to the calling of an emergency session at parliament.

The standoff ignited pre-existing tensions. The police accuse MPs—and their security forces—of abusing their privileges and acting above the law. The MPs, on the other hand, claim that the police abuse their authority and harass MPs.
