Afghans Mourn Death of Folk Singer Gul Zaman

Afghans of all walks of life, including artists and politicians, mourned the death of famous Afghan folk singer Gul Zaman, calling his death a great tragedy.

The famous Afghan singer died at age 84 in Kabul.

Dozens of Gul Zaman’s songs and music have been recorded in the archive of the Radio Television of Afghanistan (RTA).

He was considered the backbone of Pashto music, and the Afghanistan Ministry of Information and Culture granted him the title "ustad," or teacher, which is a prestigious distinction.

The Afghan music community expressed deep sorrow over his death.

“Instructor Gul Zaman was one of the singers who provided valuable service for Pashto music. I am sure that their work will be useful for the people of Afghanistan forever,” said Ariana Sayed, a famous Afghan singer.

Gul Zaman also worked as the judge for the Afghan singing contest “Afghan Stars” broadcast by the TOLO TV channel of MOBY Group.

“He had a good ethic. He never treated anyone for personal benefit. He wanted people to be happy,” said Asadullah Chishti, a musician.

At least 850 songs of Gul Zaman have been recorded for the RTA’s archive. He has mainly sung in the Pashto language.

“He thought that music was over, and there was nothing left for him to do and finally anxiety and depression caused his death,” said Shafiq Baksh, an Afghan artist.

Former President Hamid Karzai expressed sorrow over the death of Gul Zaman.

“Unfortunately, I was informed that famous singer of the country instructor Gul Zaman was passed away,” Karzai said on Twitter.

The Afghan singer was born in the solar year 1318 (1939) in the southeastern province of Khost.

He has received many music awards.
