Scapin The Schemer Adapted For Afghan Audience

Afghanistan’s Surkh-O-Safid Artistic Group, a group of performance artists from Kabul, took their production“The Schemes of Qaseem” to western Herat province this week.

The group, who adapted the popular play “Scapin the Schemer” by French playwright Molière, said on Thursday their one-day performance was aimed at “introducing theater to the people”.

The three-act comedy of intrigue was adapted by the group to make it “more Afghan”.

“We wanted to make this show Afghan. Everything, even the clothes and the personalities and not only for one ethnic (group) but also all ethnic groups of Afghanistan,” said Naeem Ayoubi, the show’s director.

“The Schemes of Qaseem is about a person which is very kind-hearted and playing to help his friends and, in this show, the culture of all ethnicities is showcased,” members of the group said.

Shafaq Zendagi, one of the actors in the show, said: “What Qaseem’s doing is for the benefit of others and the money that he is taking is for two youths and he punishes ruthless fathers and misogynists.”

“I want to be a role-model for other girls. I want them (girls) to support us,” said Fatema Tawakuli, another of the show’s actors.

The group’s performance was meanwhile warmly welcomed by residents of Herat and a number of fans said it“is a positive step for the development of the arts.”

“Today’s performance was very good,” said Massouda Hassanzada, one member of the audience adding that “the team had localized the show.”

Nargis, another member of the audience, said: “Really it was very interesting. Theater showing the reality of society.”

The members of the performance art group said they “want to hold the show in other provinces of the country too.”
