Taliban Restores Customs Activities in Key Border Areas

Days after taking over three key border towns in the west of Afghanistan, the Taliban resumed customs activities, collecting “millions of Afghanis” a day, the private sector in Herat said.

The Taliban this week took control of Torghundi border town, one of the two trade gateways between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, and the Islam Qala customs department, a key trade gateway into Iran.

“A rule was applied by them in which fuel, gas and other different goods are charged 30,000 Afs ($370) to 50,000 Afs ($600),” said Saad Sediqqi, the deputy head of the Herat chamber of trade and investment.

A provincial council member in Farah said that the Taliban has also activated the Sheikh Abu Nasr Farahi customs – a key trade route to Iran, from where they earn “millions of Afghanis every day.

“We ask the government to take control of the border towns, conduct commando operations so that the government has control over its revenue sources,” said Dadullah Qane, head of the Farah provincial council.

Herat officials said that security and defense forces, as well as the public uprising forces, will soon start operations to retake the Torghundi and Islam Qala border towns.

“Effective measures are on hand to boost security, suppress terrorists, clear highways and ensure the security of trade and economic centers,” Herat governor’s spokesman Jailani Farhad said. “Herat residents will feel its results soon.”

TOLOnews could not get the Taliban’s comment on the matter, but recently a Taliban spokesman said that the group will soon resume customs activities in the border towns.
