Afghan Economic Projects Suspended for Lack of Funds

The suspension of all optional projects by the Ministry of Finance has raised concerns among citizens, saying this will lead the country into greater poverty and will increase the unemployment rate.

The Ministry of Finance on Saturday announced the suspension of optional projects whose total value in the National Budget Document reached 89 billion Afghanis (over $1 billion).

But the Ministry of Economy says that the government's economic institutions are looking for a way to curb the negative impact of the current situation on the lives of citizens.

Rafi Tabeh, a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, said: “We provided the necessary funds for security issues, which are important priorities of the government, for the timely fulfillment of the salaries of civilian and military personnel, and for the other needs of the government agencies.”

"The Ministry of Economy is working in full coordination with the economic and development sectors to provide a solution to the current situation in the country and its effect," said Noria Nazhat, media director at the Ministry of Economy.

But the question being raised is how is it possible that the suspension of the optional budget will not worsen the economic situation in the country? There is a list of construction projects that have been stopped due to lack of funding and are not being implemented at the moment.

With the enforcement of the decision by the Ministry of Finance, the projects of several companies have been suspended recently, and their workers are now unemployed.

Several economic experts say that in the current situation, more development projects are needed to prevent the deterioration of the economic situation in the country and to reduce people's concerns.

"The suspension of the development projects by the government will pave the way for poverty and unemployment more than before," said Abdul Wasi Haydari, an economics expert.

"The stopped foreign aid, the seizure of ports, and the widespread corruption led the government to make this decision. The re-use of this money in health and security projects is not optimistic at all," said Khwajah Fahim Abasi, another economics expert.

The Ministry of Finance has requested $200 milliin to $250 million from Afghanistan donors to continue work on a number of development programs.
