The price of chickens and chicken eggs have spiked amid severe economic challenges gripping Afghanistan ahead of winter.
Residents of the capital city of Kabul said that the price of one egg is 12 Afs.
The chamber of industry and mines said that the remaining unsolved obstacles in the import of goods has caused a high spike in the price of eggs and chickens.
“I previously bought one egg for about five to six Afs but now the price is around 12 to 13 Afs,” said, Abdul Matin, a resident of Kabul.
The businessmen said that the expensive transport of the goods is another reason for the high price of eggs.
“One of the reasons for the increase of the egg price is the closure of border as the majority of eggs are imported from Pakistan,” said Faridon, a businessman.
As Afghanistan is facing an economic meltdown, many chicken farmers are facing a collapse in business.
A member of the chamber of industry and mines, Rahimullah Samandari, said the lack of support for domestic industry and investment by the former government caused the collapse of the chicken farms.
“The collapse of the farms posed a reduction in chicken production in Afghanistan, and we must rely on imports,” he said.
Around 10,000 chicken farms were operating previously. Around 20 percent of these farms were producing eggs. However, many of the farms have stopped production.
Afghanistan currently imports eggs from Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
