Afghan Pine Nut Exports Drop Despite High Yield

Pine nut sellers expressed concern over the lack of access to good markets abroad, saying that despite good production, the exports of pine nuts are still at a low level.

According to pine nut traders, nearly 1,000 metric tons of pine nuts have been exported abroad, which is a significant decrease compared to previous years. The pine nuts were exported via air corridor to China.

“This year the yield is good compared to the previous years, we export our products to India and China. But after the recent political changes and the lack of flights (air corridor), the exports to China have dropped," said Abdul Ahad, a pine nut seller.

The price of pine nuts has also dropped.

“Last year, the price (for 7 kg) was from 8,000 to 14,000 Afs. This year, 7kg of pine nuts cost 6,000 to 7,000 Afs. Everyone sells their products below price,” said Waheed, a pine nut seller.

“A large part of Afghanistan’s pine nuts are being sold in Chinese markets either directly or indirectly. Based on last year’s statistics, around 4,000 tons of pine nuts were exported to China through the air corridors,” said Salman Reha, an Afghan trader in China.

Pine nuts are a major Afghan export.
