Afghan Brick Factories Shut Down as Demand Drops

The owners of brick factories said they are facing a breakdown as demand has dropped in the market.

Abdul Waris has been working in a brick factory for around four years in the Deh Sabz district of Kabul province.

Waris said that at least 100 people were working this season in the factory but the number of workers has significantly dropped.

“The economic challenges have increased. They were paying us around 10,000 Afs but you know that the business is down now, I am being paid 5,000 Afs,” he said.

Lack of demand and other economic challenges forced many brick factories to stop their operations.

“The price of coal increased and the demands have dropped. I was making a good income before but not right now,” said Mujtaba, a worker.

There are total of 700 brick factories in Deh-Sabz district, where dozens of workers have become jobless as some the factories have stopped their activities.
