West Says US, Islamic Emirate to Meet in Tashkent

The US special envoy for Afghanistan, Thomas West, on Twitter said that a senior "US inter-agency team will continue pragmatic engagement with the Taliban and Afghan technocrats regarding macroeconomic stability issue."

The US Department of State said in an earlier statement that the Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, will join Special Representative West for a meeting with the Taliban to address the economic challenges faced by the Afghan people.

The Afghanistan Ministry of Economy said that the meeting between the two sides will focus on Afghanistan’s Central Bank Assets.

"The agenda of the talks are the strengthening of the Afghan economy, the creation of a solution for banking affairs, Afghanistan becoming a regional economic hub, and the frozen Afghan assets," said Abdul Latif Nazari, Deputy Minister of Economy.

The economists provided various opinions in this regard.

"The role of the US for making a regional and worldwide consensus for addressing the economic situation in Afghanistan could be considered necessary," said Shakir Yaqobi, an economist.

"This could be to open banking relations with other banks and the unfreezing of Afghan assets and for economic development," said Darya Khan, an economist.
