Sanctions Affect Investment Program in Afghanistan: ACCI

The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said that the sanctions imposed by the international community have severely affected investment in Afghanistan.

Speaking at a gathering in Kabul, Islamic Emirate officials named sanctions as the main reason for the economic crisis in the country.

A member of the ACCI, Khanjan Aolkozai, said that traders are struggling with restrictions in the banking system and with the transition of money.

“The major investments have decreased, unfortunately. The foreigners do not even want to conduct research and do not put any investment in the country. The main reason is sanctions because when a company comes to invest, how will it transfer the money?” said, a member of the ACCI.

The deputy Minister of Economy, Abdul Latif Nazari, said that the sanctions on Afghanistan are due to political issues.

“The sanctions that are imposed on Afghanistan are followed with political goals, and therefore, they have no legal basis, for example the freezing of the Afghan assets is completely in contrast with the international law,” he said.

Afghanistan is currently faced with a severe economic and humanitarian crisis, with more than 24 million people in grave need of humanitarian assistance.

“There is no business and the winter is coming. We will rely on God,” said Abdul Rahman, a resident of Kabul.

“The sanctions imposed on Afghanistan by the US have affected the business compared to before,” said Mohammad Akbar, a resident of Kabul.

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in a report said that some 24.4 million people, or 59 per cent of the estimated population, of whom 11.8 million are women and girls, need humanitarian assistance in 2022, up from 18.4 million at the beginning of 2021.
