The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) said that it has launched “30+ development programs” in Afghanistan to bring life-saving assistance to vulnerable communities.

The agency said in a recent report that the majority of Afghans depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, and therefore the “USAID’s deep commitment to the people of Afghanistan continues and our efforts to improve food security begin with the men and women who dedicate their lives to serving their communities.”

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock called the aid important for Afghanistan’s agriculture sector.

“When these projects are implemented, most of the problems in the agriculture sector will be removed,” said Musbahuddin Mustaeen, a spokesman for the ministry.

Afghanistan Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock suggested that the agriculture system needs modernization to overcome problems facing farmers.

“We suggest that these projects should be allocated in the industrial filed of agriculture. It provides loan to farmers because our farmers need standard refrigerators. It will benefit both farmers and the private sector,” said Mirwais Hajizada, deputy head of the chamber of agriculture.

Meanwhile, farmers expressed their concerns over the fall in their harvest, saying they need fertilizers and fertilized seeds.

“Farmers should get fertilized seeds. There should be attention to the price of fertilizers,” said Mohammad Shirin, a farmer.

“Farmers are faced with lack of water and even drought,” said Sultan, a farmer.

The USAID report says that “decades of conflict, severe drought, restrictive financial regulations, and limited access to markets and resources such as high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and new technologies stand in the way of Afghan farmers, posing what seem to be insurmountable challenges.”

Earlier, the Afghanistan Chamber of Agriculture said that hundreds of thousands of acres of land has been affected by floods in Afghanistan.
