Ministry: More Electricity Needed to Mine Mes Aynak

The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum said that for the extraction at the Mes Aynak mines in Logar, more electricity is needed.

The acting minister of the ministry said that the provision of electricity for extraction in Mes Aynak in Logar and a coal mine in Bamiyan province has been assigned to the Chinese company MCC.

Shahabuddin Delawar said that the existence of ancient artifacts is the reason for the postponement of the project, and talks about starting work on the mine have begun with the company.

"To produce four hundred megawatts of electricity, the Bamiyan coal mine is maintained for the Chinese company MCC," said Shahabuddin Delawar, the acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum.

The acting minister of Mines and Petroleum, in a ceremony held for the purpose of awarding letters of commendation to provincial mining chiefs, said that no one will be allowed to extract from the mine illegally.

"We will never allow any person or group to mine illegally in Afghanistan," said Shahabuddin Delawar, the acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum.

Meanwhile, analysts say that beginning the extraction from Mes Aynak in Logar will facilitate work for many people.

"Investing in the Mes Aynak Logar copper mine can create more than five thousand job opportunities for people in the community, and this is one of the positive effects that plays an important role for the country," said Shaker Ibrahimi, an economist.

"Processing our minerals inside the country will increase the wealth," said Mohammad Karim Azimi, economist.

The Logar copper contract was signed with MCC in 2008 but after nearly fourteen years its extraction has not yet started.
