The 1st deputy of the Prime Minister, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, expressed criticism over the freezing of Afghan assets by the US, saying that Washington has acted against its promises after its pullout from Afghanistan.
He made the remarks at the gathering held to celebrate the third anniversary of the Doha agreement- which was signed on February 29th, 2021 between the US and the Taliban.
“It froze the assets of the people of Afghanistan illegally. Its further illegitimate action is that they kidnapped the rest of the world as well,” Baradar said.
This comes as the Ministry of Economy (MoE) also called the suspension of the development aid by the US a violation of the Doha Agreement.
“The abrupt suspension of the development of aid of the international community has affected major economic matters such as poverty, unemployment, GDP, trade activities; and foreign and domestic investment,” said Abdul Rahman Habib, a spokesman for the Ministry of Economy.
“The Doha Agreement as affected the political status of Afghanistan and has impacted the economic situation in the country as well. It brought the Afghan economy crisis and collapse,” said Mir Shikib Mir, an economist.
The Afghan traders say that they are facing severe problems in the transaction of money abroad.
The acting head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI), Mohammad Younus Momand, said that the existing sanctions have affected the country’s economy.
“If the Doha Agreement was implemented by the other side, we might have not faced economic problems. But you know now that Afghanistan is faced with economic restrictions,” he said.
According to the UN, Afghanistan’s GDP has dropped 30 to 35 percent over the past 18 months.
