Afghanistan Central Bank officials said that a significant portion of the newly printed banknotes worth 100 billion Afghanis have been received and are being regularly distributed through the Central Bank and private banks.
Hidayatullah Badri, the Afghan Central Bank's acting head, said that the bank has maintained the afghani's value against foreign currencies.
The most significant accomplishments of the Central Bank over the last year, they said, were the management of inflation, the development of an Islamic banking system, the activation of a new licensing system for money service businesses and exchange offices, and an increase in the public's deposits in banks.
"In the past year, the central bank has been able to print new banknotes and transfer a large portion of it to the country,” Badri said.
"About 100 billion afghani will be printed; a significant portion of it is already available to us, and the distribution mechanism is also in place in the conversion and distribution section on a regular basis,” said Ahmad Javad Saddad, the general director of monetary policies of the Central Bank.
In the meantime, Central Bank officials also announced a decline in the rate of inflation and said that by properly managing exchange reserves, the demand for currency in the domestic markets had been addressed.
"If customers visit banks and withdraw their savings, it is obvious that banks have invested money in economic sectors and provided employment for certain people, and in such cases banks collapse. We ask our citizens to trust the banking system. It is under control,” said Mohammad Yusuf Salim, the director general of Islamic banking at the Central Bank.
"All 3,000 individual licenses for money exchangers that were previously distributed have been cancelled. Then, as a financial and non-banking institution, money exchangers and money supply services offer exchange services and money services in accordance with national and international standards using an electronic system,” said Ahmad Zahir Naserzai, general director of non-banking institutions of the Central Bank.
According to data from the Central Bank, the bank has received from the nation's financial system around 560,000 reports of large cash transactions and 618 reports of suspicious transactions. A total of 100 suspicious financial transactions were examined during this time, and 30 of those cases were turned over to the law enforcement authorities.
