Local officials in Daikundi report that over 24,000 metric tons of almonds have been harvested in the province this year, an 18 percent increase compared to last year.
Almonds are considered one of Daikundi’s most important agricultural products.
According to statistics, more than 70 percent of families earn their livelihood through gardening, especially almond cultivation.
Sayed Mustafa Saleh, head of Daikundi's Information and Culture Department, said, “Due to sufficient rainfall and water availability, approximately 25,488 metric tons of almonds have been produced, showing an 18 percent increase from last year.”
However, several orchard owners point to cold weather and water shortages as challenges that have negatively impacted agricultural products, particularly almonds.
Mohammad Nazar, one of the orchard owners, said, “Those who used to harvest 1400 to 2100 kg ser of almonds in previous years have harvested only 140 to 210 kg this year. This situation has negatively affected people's economy. If the government establishes a suitable market for almond sales, it would be beneficial.”
Jalil, a trader, said, “Almond yields were lower this year than last due to an untimely cold spell early in the year, which damaged the almond trees.”
Mohammad Nabi, another orchard owner, said, “In past years, I harvested 300 ser of almonds and had good wheat yields too. But now, neither the fields nor the trees are in good condition.”
Almonds, walnuts, apples, grapes, apricots, and peaches are among the main agricultural products in Daikundi. However, orchard owners say that the mountainous and challenging routes from Daikundi to other provinces prevent them from selling their products at favorable prices.
