The 12th Silk Road Mayors Forum was held in Kabul on Friday in which mayors from the Silk Road countries and senior Afghan officials discussed urban development and connectivity.
Addressing the event, President Ashraf Ghani said the countries involved in the Silk Road’s route should have more cooperation with each other in terms of reconstruction.
Ghani said there is a need for accurate planning to develop Afghanistan’s cities.
The Silk Road reconstruction is crucial for the region and the world, Ghani said, adding that Afghanistan’s role as the Asia’s crossroad should be kept in the reconstruction plan.
“It is a need to concentrate on urban development, economic development and common points. The railway and the optic fiber network will be established, but experts should lead the process,” Ghani said.
He pointed out to the Silk Road’s cultural and ancient importance and said the route has played a vital role in the expansion of world’s civilizations.
“Ai-Khanoum (in Afghanistan’s Takhar province) is the only city outside of Greece which is mapped by Greeks and established in line with international norms. This shows that we have never been isolated of the civilizations, and we were always connected to the civilizations,” Ghani added.
At the same event, Urban Development Minister Sayed Sadat Mansoor Naderi said the new reconstruction plan of the Silk Road which is supported by Chinese government will help the economic growth in the region.
“The establishment of this route has been important for the world’s economic stability and it will benefit the economy of many countries,” said Naderi.
