Contracts Worth $21M Signed On Road Construction In Balkh

Contracts worth AFs1.7 billion ($21 million) were signed on two road construction projects in northern Balkh province at a ceremony in Kabul on Saturday.

One ring road is also included in the projects, said Yama Yari, Acting Minister of Transportation and Public Works.

The first road is the Mazar-e-Sharif city’s ring-road which is 17.4 kilometers in length and will be constructed within two years.

The second road will be constructed along the east side of Tangi Shafa river and it will be 1.8 kilometers in length which will be constructed within five months.

“The value of the contracts signed today (Saturday) are more than AFs1.7 billion. The road will be 17 kilometers long, 40 meters width and will have six lanesand it will be a standard road. This project is one of the biggest investments of the Ministry of Transport in Balkh,” Yari said.

A lawmaker from Balkh, Abbas Ibrahimzada, said more projects are needed to be implemented in the northern province.

“We call on the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works to pay more attention to the districts located far from Mazar-e-Sharif city (the capital of Balkh). There is a road in Charkint district, a road in Dawlat Abad district and a few roads in other districts which the ministry should pay attention to their construction,” said Ibrahimzada.

Representatives of the contractor companies said insecurity in the province is one of the biggest challenges for them but insisted that they will finish the projects based on the timelines.
